3rd EUROMEDITERRANEAN
MEETING FOR THE WORKING PEOPLE ECONOMY
CONCLUSIONS FROM THE WORKSHOP WITH
SUBJECT:
The management of historical and
cultural monuments by the society itself as common goods
At
the discussion there was a rich exchange of views concerning the situation
dominating in each country, in what concerns the treating of monuments of history and civilization. There
was a common realization that even the monuments are faced as merchandise in
the capitalism and in many areas where monuments exist, they are conceded to
enterprises for commercial, touristic, mining and other “investing” activities the
monuments being in danger of disdain, destruction even of disappearance. Unfortunately
the central and local authorities, which concede or contribute to the conceding
of the monuments to enterprises in the name of “development” are seriously
responsible for the clearance of historical monuments.
However
the people who are aware that the monuments our ancestors created consist a
common heritage of all of us, we shall not only struggle against their ceding
to private individuals, but we are also decided to protect and administer them
ourselves.
Those
who participated in the discussion based on our experience from our countries concluded
that unfortunately the majority of citizens are not sufficiently informed on
the significance of historical monuments, even of those situated in the
neighborhoods or the municipalities where they reside, while at the same time
they believe that the state takes care for their protection, conservation and correct
management.
For
this reason we agreed
a) To
take initiatives of informing citizens through collectivities or movements in
which we participate
b) To
contribute to struggles against the clearance of the monuments of history and
civilization
c) To
organize actions of management of the monuments by the citizens themselves
d) To
take initiative for coordination in a European level of movements and
collectivities working with historical monuments
For
this purpose it was agreed that the possibilities of the organization of a
first meeting taking place in another city, Napoli of Italy or the small town
of Taxi, were proposed, are investigated.
